the sistas
Staying on the sisters theme, did you favor or relate to any of the siblings best? Despite their differences, I thought all of them engaged in some foolhardy behavior based on their character ... Dorothy trusting Bud for love; Ellen investigating and showing off her pluckiness; Marion trusting Bud because she's lonely.

I enjoyed plucky Ellen, but my favorite was probably Marion, with her love of art and books and her desire for independence and her apartment with the well-chosen objets.
Marion definitely, for all the reasons Erin said. She was a bit blinded by love, but she was basically a woman of sense. I like how she blossomed in a romantic setting, especially after she had seemingly resigned herself to a lifetime of weekends alone cleaning her apartment. All her art and books served her well as a lover. I also like how she was quietly pretty vs. the big obvious beauty of her sisters.
I did like Ellen's sassiness, though. I found her devotion to her sister and justice very touching — perfect traits in a girl detective!
And, as I said in a comment below, I also had a soft spot for Dorrie.
This was my favorite passage of the book:
"Had (Marion) been an artist, she would have painted a self-portrait; instead she decorated two rooms, charging them with objects which some visitor, some day, would recognize and understand."
And it's so creepy that when Bud planned to go after her, he understood well enough how important the art and books would be to her.
I liked that passage, too! I sort of had the feeling that the author longed to meet a girl like Marion vs. the silly sort that was all too common then. He seems like the kind of guy who understands that mere beauty wears thin, that having an interesting companion with a brain is a far superior life.
