Names and causes

Did you find it peculiar that there were no names? I think at least one person was mentioned by name, but that was not a "real" name. The boy and the man were just the boy and the man. And the boy did call the man "Papa." This made the story more minimalist in a way, more essential. Was it just part of this idea that you wouldn't have a name if no one addressed you? That your identity is just bare bones, like man, boy, Papa, Bad People, Good People.

And why is there no real explanation of how things got this way? Of what exactly happened to blot out the sun. Is the idea that causes, like names, are moot points in the overwhelming fact of how things are now?

That's probably right. When all that really matters is that you find some food and a safe place to sleep, the rest is frivolous.

Did you want to know what caused it? I kind of assumed it was nuclear holocaust, but I suppose it could as easily have been a giant asteroid or something.

At first I really DID want to know what caused it, and I assumed it was some result of human stupidity, but it quickly became a moot point for me. "Why" just seemed so irrelevant in the scheme of things. What woud you do with the answer?

Were you curious about the cause?

I was curious at first, too. And I was even more curious after the scene with the wife where they hear noises and such. But then, like you, I didn't care anymore. Because it really doesn't matter.

I guess I satisfied my curiosity by assuming it was nuclear holocaust.
I suppose that's because I wanted to believe that only human stupidity could destroy the world in that way. To account it to natural causes, like an asteroid, doesn't quite square with my...well with my theology, I suppose.
I don't have the book with me to see just what gave me that impression. What else could have caused the complete devestation of all wildife and vegetation besides nuclear fallout.

Did you think the whole globe was like this or only the USA? I suppose it doesn't matter.

I thought the whole world was like this.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. There was no communication with the rest of the world, though, so who knows?
