Tons. I think it's all the Greek stuff that makes the novel SO American and so epic. The generational stuff. The American Dream component. The re-invention of self in a new land (on so many levels). The pain of Smyrna's destruction giving rise to new aspirations in Detroit of all places! The pagan myths. The clash of Antique and Modern. The earthiness and sophistication. The complexity of sexuality and gender in Classical culture.
Amen, kc. His Greek culture is Cal's lens to his entire life and the life of his family. It's part of what makes the novel so nuanced and brillant. It would not have been the same story set with another culture as background.
