heart trouble

Didion and her husband seemed to react very differently to his heart condition ("they call it the widow-maker"). Was she unwilling to face the severity of his condition? If so how did that influence her grieving process after his death?

I couldn't really get a read on that. It seemed like she took his condition very seriously, even if she didn't overtly share his conviction that he wouldn't live long. I think it was very tempting for her to look back on the months leading up to his death and re-examine certain conversations and whatnot for clues. I suppose it's always irresistible mentally to search the past for junctures where you could have made a different choice.

Could it have been more "magical thinking" back when he had the surgery and she believed the problem was "fixed"? I mean, it seems like maybe she tends to let herself believe the best, even if it's not the most rational outcome.
