I did love the war story. I found the camp and the characters and the plot line totally riveting. And the aftermath too — how people dealt with this horrendous reality and then just went back to being insurance salesmen or whatever. It's a common theme in war stories, the dramatic horror vs. the mundane bracketing it, but I thought it was especially effective here.
I liked the Basho element a lot — and how classical Japanese literary themes were incorporated.
