I believe Roseanne, if not in every detail, then in her emotional truth. I think Father Gaunt has zero credibility. Roseanne may have misremembered some things or had a misunderstanding of them to begin with — like certain things about her father, how could she remember them accurately if she was never rightly acquainted with them to begin with? But she would not deliberately lie, which I can't say for Gaunt, and she has a coherence of heart and a hunger to make sense of her experience that completely won me over.
Also, Roseanne said something very telling on this point: I would rather remember aright than just to remember things so they will stand in my favour. That luxury is not allowed to me.
Yes, I think you're right. I think absolutely Father Gaunt would have altered the story so it would stand in his favor. I had a similar feeling to Dr. Grene at the end: Maybe Roseanne's father was a police officer and maybe he wasn't, but it doesn't really matter. Roseanne's emotional truth matters more.
