Rewind to first story

In a story dealing with heredity, what do you think was the point of Richard's being born with six fingers?

Perhaps it's there to heighten our sense of heredity and genetics (the kids were born without it), to introduce Richard's connections with scientists of the past (Like the minor evolutionist Robert Chambers...), and to say something about his personality (Richard kept his left [hand] in his pocket when lecturing).

Yeah, I think it was a neat little genetic aside. Plus, it showed something about Richard's excessive vanity in his professional life.

In other hexadactyly news, the new "Bond Girl," Gemma Arterton, was born with six fingers on each hand, and has bumpy scars where they used to be.
