Fact and fiction

What did you think of Bennett's mingling of fact and fiction — putting real people in made-up situations? Did you think the effectiveness of the novella depended on just that?

I think so. I loved the technique. I found it really funny. I liked picturing the real people while I read.

I loved the technique, too, especially with someone like the Queen, who is so removed from the rest of us and so emotionally guarded. We can only speculate on what her interior life is like, and this book is splendid speculation, as was the movie "The Queen."

Exactly. The monarchy is funny, because they don't do prime-time TV interviews like all the celebrities and politicians in America do. So you really don't know what they're like or what their attitudes might be.
