"Charming Billy"

To begin with, what was your initial impression of this novel? Did you like it?

I liked it a lot. It's so interesting how the Amazon reviews are almost evenly divided between loving it and hating it. Just reading through some of them, it seems like the major complaints are that it's boring, slow, confusing, pointless, etc. -- not that it's too depressing or melancholy. So I have to think people just don't appreciate it for what it is. I did find some of the relationships confusing at times, especially with the large number of minor characters, but it wasn't bothersome enough to lessen my enjoyment of the writing and the story.
