David's dreams

The dream sequences in the book were really great. What do you make of David's recurring dream of crawling through successively smaller doors into the bombed interior of a church?

That's perplexing. I looked at the drawings again and am not really sure what to think. There's a sense of escape to ... a bombed-out church, which suggests a ruined salvation of some sort, or maybe a destruction of faith.
