Jennifer Pusey

Who WAS this chick? What was she supposed to be about? Oh — and what happened with that incident with the bellboy? Did he stumble upon Jennifer and Mr. Neville, or what was the fracas, exactly?

And why is her name an uncomfortable sounding combination of "p*ssy" and "pushy"? Tell me that.

I didn't get exactly what that fracas was. Maybe the bellboy did stumble on the two of them together, Jennifer screamed, Mrs. Pusey came running and just saw the bellboy. Or Jennifer led her to believe the noise she heard was the bellboy to divert attention from Neville? Not clear to me. But weird that the mother of a nearly 40-year-old daughter would give a crap whom she was sleeping with! Did she need to harbor some illusion that Jennifer was saving herself for marriage, or was she just upset to discover that Jennifer might have a significant part of life from which she was excluded and over which she had no control?

I figured Jennifer was sleeping with the bellboy, too, and feigned a vague assault when her mother caught him in her room. But who knows. My guess is the mom needs to feel like Jennifer's whole life is about her. She's clearly a horrible narcissist. Why Jennifer goes along with that and feels no apparent bitterness for her lack of a life is a mystery to me. Perhaps sneaking in some excitement on the side is enough for her.

Ditto on the name, kc. Bugged me throughout the story.
