What did you think of the italicized story that made up the end of each chapter? Did knowing how the paper was founded and its decades of history add something to the story?
I think the italicized sections stand alone as their own story, and it is a good and interesting story. That story also made me feel more attached to the paper, so that I felt invested in it and the people there, and thus more upset by its demise.
I agree with Ben. That aspect made me feel more attached to the paper, what it was supposed to be and how it changed over the years. A publisher with a passion, too -- that's not an aspect of the editorial process I think much about. I tend to think of it being more about a vanity vehicle.
I would have liked more story between Oliver and Betty.
How interesting that a man committed to the press has his own important story for posterity skimmed over by his grandson and discarded in the abandoned mansion with the great works of art.
I liked it, too. I'm always intrigued by the history of newspapers -- who founded them and when, how the ownership passed down over the years, the hardships, etc. I thought it was kind of sweet how Cyrus came to Europe and started the paper just to be near Betty and that he never told her or tried to win her away from her husband.
