What did you think of Robert Ford? Did you sympathize with him? Do you think he deserved to be labeled a coward? Did it surprise you that he went through with Jesse's murder?
I kind of did like Bob Ford, just because he didn't seem like much of a villain. It seems like if he had had a slight nudge in a different direction that he would have turned out differently.
Not sure he's such a coward either. An opportunist surely.
I wasn't surprised that he went through with the murder. I was surprised that Jesse was so hard to kill.
I think he realized that he destroyed a better man.
I guess I was surprised that Bob killed Jesse because Jesse was his childhood hero. He had that shoebox of James Gang mementos and seemed to idolize Jesse so much. But I suppose Bob was self-serving above all else.
I most sympathized with him when he admitted to Dorothy that he regretted killing Jesse and missed him as much as anyone. And when he said he had expected to be hailed as "the greatest man in America" and was surprised that it didn't turn out that way.
Jesse's mom was a hoot! I thought probably that's where Jesse got his personality. There was an interesting contrast, too, between her and Zee, especially since she was her namesake.

I'm finding it hard to come up with other discussion topics because the book seemed so much a character study of these two men.
Yeah, it was kind of moving how much he seemed to admire Jesse — and pathetic that he scavenged off his fame and stature the way he did.
Regarding other discussion topics, what did you think of Jesse's mom?
