Sisters

Patria, Dede, Minerva and Maria Theresa

Which of the sisters was your favorite? Which did you sympathize with or relate to the most?

Well, I loved the portrayal of all the sisters, and Minerva seemed to be the catalyst for much of the story.

Oddly, as she was drawn as a character, not so much the person, I was partial to Patria. She seemed to run on such strong passions — from faith to lust and back again, then finally channeled into the cause. I like a character with strong appetites, flawed or otherwise. Such as this part of her narration: "You'd think there was nothing else but the private debates of my flesh and spirit going on, the way I've left out the rest of my life." She even acknowledges her drives. I found it very human.

I was partial to Patria too, C! I really liked the way her character developed. She seemed so solid. Strong passions but deeply channeled.

I loved Minerva too, for her moxie and free spirit and no-apologies feminism. Her relentlessness could be overbearing at times, but it also was a dependable tower of strength that supplied much of the family's energy.

I have to join the chorus for Patria as my favorite. She seemed the most grounded, the most well-adjusted. She did what she wanted, she didn't bow to family or social pressure.

Obviously Minerva was the driving force behind the family's political engagement. There were times when I found her annoying for that reason.
