Gordon -- hero material?
If the Kingship clan had their flaws and endearing qualities, the author still chose to bring in an outsider to solve the mystery for them (instead of, say, Leo investigating on behalf of his daughters, or Marion growing suspicious of Bud on her own). Any thoughts on what Gordon brought to the story?

... and I thought Gordon was supposed to be a foil to Bud, the anti-Bud. Like KC said in an earlier post, though, at first he scared me when he was around Ellen.
Yeah, he came off as very creepy when first introduced, the way he grabbed Ellen and pursued her to her hotel room and snatched the letter and read it in the bathroom. I know the author was trying to make him believeable as a potential killer to enhance the drama, but some of that creepiness stayed with me. I think the author was holding him up in the end as a model of manhood, perhaps. He had a certain no-nonsense bravery. He didn't have any qualms about breaking into Bud's house and stealing his stuff to prove that a greater crime had been committed. He's a take-charge kind of guy, don't-take-no-for-an-answer. He's kind of a male Ellen: tough, persevering, principled, bold.
Gordon didn't actually scare me at first. The other one did, whatever his name was. (I don't have the book in front of me. kc, I should have given it back to you!) As soon as Gordon started talking, I knew he wasn't the killer. Too goofy.
Gordon had to take up the reins after Ellen was killed. He had to become the boy detective.
Do you think Miriam and Gordon hook up afterward? Or was his heart set on Ellen?
I sort of had the impression they would hook up later, yes.
I did, too. I think I said before I was shocked that we didn't get to SEE them hook up.
That another part of the unexpected from the author that I liked, that he didn't set it up with some happily ever after.
Or again, do in Marion second and leave Ellen to survive.
I can't remember if her name is Miriam or Marion anymore. Sorry.
