What were your favorite scenes from the book?

I have trouble remembering favorite scenes, especially now that I've seen the movie and gotten a little muddled by the differences.

That being said, I think the Vicomte helping the family and being spied on was particularly memorable.

I love the letter about the shakedown the marquise performed on Prévan. Plus there was Valmont's tender concern for her honor in his warnings about the formidable foe. Interesting that he had so little concern for the sakes of virtuous women but regarded the marquis's reputation in such a sacred manner.

Oh yeah, that letter was great. He was out to do grave harm to her (ruin her reputation by making a sexual conquest of her), but she brilliantly turned the tables, plus had her cake and ate it too. Didn't he deserve what he got? He was going to do worse to her!

Valmont's concern was cute, because she was more than capable, as she proved, of taking care of herself. If the marquise had lost her reputation, Valmont woud have been deprived of his dearest playmate and pasttime, so it was vital that the appearance of her honor be preserved.
