The future

The last line of the book is "I lost track after a while, happy to be home, weeping for my father, and thinking about what was next." What do you think is next for Cal? Do you think his relationship with Julie will be successful?

Good question, but, wow, who knows? I got the feeling of a sort of melancholy optimism in Cal, which I had throughout the book but especially toward the end, and it was certainly easy for me to imagine things working out well with Julie. They seemed very compatible emotionally and intellectually. And I was so relieved when he revealed his body to her and the uniqueness of it didn't throw her at all. They seemed like two people who deeply desired closeness and weren't going to let a silly thing like anatomy keep them apart.

I was surprised and glad that Cal had the courage to tell her about his condition. I wondered if the process of writing his story had helped him feel more open and relaxed about it.
