The women

Who was your favorite female character?

Good question. I think Celeste was probably my favorite. I loved the story of how she and Elias came together, about how she hardened herself against him after he had made fun of her limp. And the story of the man who told her she was worthless because she was handicapped. And maybe because of her handicap, she had tremendous empathy. She seemed to understand that slavery made people say and do things they wouldn't otherwise. Even with Moses, who acted like an asshole to his fellow slaves and who was probably responsible for her miscarriage, she was so understanding. She bore no grudge against him, and in fact cared for him for the rest of his life. I found that really touching.

Her meals to Moses would be until the end. Celeste was never to close down her days, even after Moses had died, without thinking aloud at least once to everyone and yet to no one in particular, ‘I wonder if Moses done ate yet.’

Yeah, Celeste was mine, too. Wasn't she the one who was also a bit disdainful of her masters?

I don't remember. What was the context?

There were a couple of episodes where a slave woman didn't act too impressed with Caldonia and was none too eager to be "Uncle Tom-ish" like the other slaves were being, but I can't remember now whether that was Celeste or Priscilla.

I was also fond of Alice. Beneath the crazy, she seemed to know the score.
