Luxury of access

The Queen had the luxury of meeting any author or literary scholar she wanted and quizzing them on their work. If you could meet a few writers for this purpose, whom would you pick?

And if you had access to any historic manuscript, what would it be?

Ooh, I may have to think on this one for a bit.

I think it would be awesome to examine the manuscripts of Jane Austen, to thumb through her hand-written pages, to see her emendations. Or any of the Shakespearean folios and quartos. Or to read Oscar Wilde's original love letters, to hold the actual paper. Or those ancient illuminated Celtic manuscripts.

If I could meet a living author, it'd probably be Sebastian Barry or Marilynne Robinson. And Alice Munro and Jeffrey Eugenides. And Cormac McCarthy. J.D. Salinger would be awesome, but I think he's fantastically cranky and crazy now.

Yeah, those are all good. I would jump at the chance to see any of those, too.
