The name

And now for the de rigueur title question. Why "The Imperfectionists"? Any thoughts? Is it a comment on the profession of journalism? On this particular group? On people in general?

I'm having a lot of trouble getting my head around that word "imperfectionist." I can't even figure out what it means.

I suppose an imperfectionist is dedicated to imperfection. But what does that look like? Were these folks really dedicated to imperfection? If not, then I must have the meaning of the word wrong.

I don't have any particular insights, but my thought while reading was that journalists strive for perfection in the paper but rarely achieve it. And clearly none of these characters was achieving it in their personal lives.

One definition of perfection I found: "a disposition to feel that anything less than perfect is unacceptable."

In the personal lives of many (most?) of our characters there seems to be a disposition to feel that almost anything is acceptable. Maybe they're imperfectionists in that sense! All the crappy, fraudulent relationships that they cling to because they're too tired/lazy/disillusioned/hopeless/pathetic/(fill in the blank) to get themselves out of the rut.

Oh, I like those ideas. Striving for perfection at work, as Erin notes, then train wrecks in their personal lives.
