Humbug

What is the purpose of the Humbug? He's a liar, a fraud, and no one likes him. Why does the author single him out to join the brave Milo and loyal Tock on their quest?

He is a cross-section of lovable human frailty.

Or humbug frailty, I guess.

Milo likes him.

He's the BSer of the group. Once you get to know him, and start ignoring his BS, he's okay.

I like him.

He couldn't stay in Dictionopolis -- he didn't know the words.
