I was kind of disappointed in the trajectory of the story, which, after an amusing, charming beginning, turned into such a relentless downer. I suppose that's "realistic" in some sense, but it's not very satisfying.
Oh, and as a coming-of-age story, it was rather odd because Oscar somehow never came of age (that I could perceive). He seemed trapped in a very particular mode of being. I think of a coming-of-age as picking up some insights that allow you to navigate adulthood, and I didn't see that with Oscar.
I agree. There were some really fun, interesting elements, but it became such a downer. And you knew things were not going to end well for Oscar.
I always find it interesting to read Pulitzer winners. I'm often somewhat puzzled by the choices. I'm assuming that "the voice" of this book, the style of it, had a lot to do with its winning.
